Paths and walkways are the features that pull the garden spaces together. Paths can be laid out in many ways, depending on the terrain. A steep slope might require a multi-leveled terrace united by pathways and borders; a series of curving paths laid out in interesting patterns can give more dimension to a flatter space or connect different settings; a more symmetrical series of paths leading to a doorway or garden gate can provide a formal, traditional appearance. A path or walkway should invite you to follow it and will determine how you perceive the landscape. As such, a path can provide a sense of mystery, symmetry, or a more complex visual palette. Materials are critical. For instance, large stepping stones and boulders give a garden strength and a sense of permanence, while more delicate paving stones of contrasting materials can create a more subtle stone carpet.
