Fences and garden gates tend to be less durable than walls, but can sometimes serve the same function of enclosure - to screen views or protect privacy or to keep people and animals in or out. They can provide additional interest and complement the house or other structures by their height, patterns, textures and types of materials used.

A whole range of other functional structures exist for the garden - garages, tool sheds, and pool houses are popular additions that can be built into the whole garden scheme. Other structures are more decorative - pergolas, sundials, pedestal birdbaths, and garden urns and sculpture can become a focal point of the garden, or a hidden surprise. Trellises and arbors can form living walls that change with the seasons.
